If you look at this 1 eye heaven & earth dzi bead, what do you see? There are no holes being drilled into this dzi bead.
Some believed that the contrast between a modern dzi bead and an old one might be detected by the timing the holes drilled.
In a modern dzi,
- the holes are drilled ahead of its etching
- both the holes drilled are very symmetrical or very straight
whilst in an old dzi
- you can see that the holes drilled in from one side to the other might not symmetrical or that straight – one side the hole can be in the middle whilst the other side the hold is not right at the diameter but at the side WAIT! There is more to read… read on »

Whatever type of collector you might be say a coin collector or dzi bead collector, we would naturally love to see the “shine” of our collections. Hence, we would resort to the “cleaning” of our precious collection like dzi-bead to get rid of dirt, etc. The cleaning material we use might be the natural and the unnatural type of abrasive material.
However, please do not be unduly concern with the “dirtiness” of the dzi bead. In fact, we must not use such abrasive materials or even natural materials like sea-salt water to clean the dzi bead as this will see the loss of the beautiful patina/sheen,etc of the dzi bead. Basically, do let the pure dzi bead be “natural in line with the time it has passed”
After saying that, perhaps some small pampering/maintenance of our valuable powerful dzi bead can be done.

In some Dzi Beads, we see some unusual streaks or marking. The reason being that during the design & etching of the Dzi Beads, certain layers of agate or chalcedony do not accept the etching material that the symbols on Dzi Beads are derived from Because of this, the areas that refuse the etching are left having no bead design .The agate that refuses the color will normally be of a lighter gray/white in color. Interestingly this natural streak is also called Dragon Marks.
So why is such name being so called? Well, in the Ancient past, the Tibetan considered the Dragon in the highest hierarchy of the animal kingdom and is a mystical and powerful creature. The Tibetan believed that these Dragon Marks are derived when the Dragon clawed into the bead(s). Those Dzi bead marked by a dragon must have initially got the fancy of the dragon and was then dropped or discarded by the dragon because it was imperfect. However, as those Dzi Beads that have been clawed by the dragon, they are said to carry some of the energy of the dragon hence the term Dragon Mark.

These natural streaks/dragon marks will affect the grade and price of Dzi Beads but it is a rarity amongst new or modern dzi. Perhaps the reason being the new Dzi must have been selected properly under quality control hence we cannot find such “defects re: natural streaks”

In the below picture, do you notice that there is the dig/chip mark shown at the left hand corner of the old dzi?

This dig mark really is chipped off normally at the corner of the dzi bead for medicinal purpose. Incidentally, the use of Dzi bead as a medical ingredients in Tibet is well known. Note that if the chipping is not properly done, the dzi bead might break.
You should not see such chip/dig mark in new dzi beads.
